Metsa 2025

The second edition of the Metsa Sustainability Awards, in partnership with the CSSA  has firmly established these honours, as the most thorough and sought after environmental awards in the UK’s Cleaning Industry, with only 5 categories and 3 finalists per sector, all awards were then entered in to the Judges Choice Category and a more Qualitative & Innovative framework was overlayed, allowing stand out assessments from the judges to be taken into account, as well as the basic scores.

BioVate Hygienics has been honoured with this prestigious Judges’ Choice Award (National) at the 2025 Metsa Sustainability Awards, in recognition of its Ecocert Naturally Derived Range of biological cleaning products. This national accolade was awarded following a rigorous, criteria-led evaluation process that placed particular emphasis on innovation, impact, and verified sustainability credentials, in line with the evolving landscape of greenwashing regulations.

The judging process included detailed assessment against defined sustainability criteria, with scores awarded by an expert panel. In alignment with anticipated green claims legislation, specific attention was given to third-party certifications and evidence-based claims. Following the main round of assessment, all qualifying entries were entered into a secondary Judges’ Choice category, where a more qualitative and innovative framework was applied—highlighting entries with stand-out impact and originality.

The judges praised BioVate’s range for its genuine commitment to sustainability, stating:

  • “Proven certifications ensure the products are genuinely environmentally responsible, biodegradable, cruelty-free, and free from harmful chemicals.”

  • “This has the potential for a very big positive impact.”

The citation read out on the night noted:

The key innovation is, they are the first UK company to use natural colours and fragrances in cleaning products, all sourced from natural dyes in both plant and vegetable waste. This is a safer, eco-friendly approach, and ensures the products are genuinely environmentally responsible, biodegradable, cruelty-free, free from harmful chemicals

Industry-First Innovation

The winning entry centred on BioVate Hygienics’ Ecocert Naturally Derived Range, a market-leading development in sustainable cleaning. Among the innovations recognised:

  • BioVate is the first UK manufacturer of commercial cleaning products to receive Ecocert Ecodetergents certification for a naturally derived range.

  • The range includes the UK’s first use of natural colours and fragrances in cleaning products, extracted from plant and vegetable waste. These features not only improve user recognition and experience—vital for professional cleaning operatives—but also remove reliance on synthetic, chemical additives.

  • The company has also introduced a global first in professional packaging: biodegradable, plastic-free containers made from vegetable waste fibre and recycled paper pulp.

Measurable Impact

The judges highlighted the measurable and multi-faceted sustainability impact of the range:

  • Environmental: The products use biodegradable ingredients such as enzymes, bacteria, and plant-based surfactants, reducing pollution and ecological harm.

  • Anti-Greenwashing: In response to the UK’s Green Claims Code, all environmental claims are independently validated, providing verified assurance of the products’ sustainability credentials.

  • Packaging Innovation: By replacing traditional plastic with biodegradable pulp packaging, BioVate is tackling single-use plastic at its source.

  • Carbon Reduction: Through carbon mapping of Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions and the use of super-concentrates, plant waste ingredients, and non-petroleum-based materials, the range achieves an ultra-low carbon footprint—down to just 0.015g of CO₂ per in-use spray bottle.

A Step Forward for the Cleaning Industry

The recognition at the Metsa Awards affirms BioVate Hygienics’ role as a catalyst for meaningful environmental change in the cleaning and hygiene sector. The company’s mission to innovate responsibly is underpinned by science, verified by certification, and driven by a vision for a plastic-free, low-carbon future.
